While the President was angry at Look for publishing the photos without consent he apparently liked the Caroline story, at least as related to Stanley by Ted Sorensen, who said he had discussed the article with the First Lady.

“What did you think of it?” asked Jackie.

“We all read it on the plane coming up [to Hyannis Port]. The President liked it. Pierre liked it. I liked it,” Sorensen said.

“That doesn’t say much for your literary judgment,” she said.

The Caroline photos caused a deep freeze that lasted for a few weeks, but the President and the photographer needed each other too much to remain adversaries. As Laura Bergquist, Look correspondent, said of JFK: “He was a reasonable man open to persuasion in matters of self-interest.”
